Science,War and Religion

Science has changed the idea and nature of war.Wars were fought in ancient days  between the army of one country and that of an other with arrows ,spears,hatches and swords.They were won or lost in the battle fields.Personal bravery was was a matter of great honor.These wars were limited only to battle field.The cultivators of lands,the school children,the old,the women,the shopkeepers and the workers in the factories were not attacked by the enemy.Wars in olden days were less destructive .The number of those who who were killed reached only hundreds or thousands.But now those days are gone.

The inventions of science have made war more deadly and more extensive .With the invention of gun and gunpowder ,science made an epoch making contribution to war.During the course of time ,rifles and cannons were made and used by the soldiers .The use of such deadly weapon first began in the East.During the world war first ,science took a sudden leap and became a hand made to war.War was mechanized.Guns were improved to bombard forts and cities situated at a distance sixty or seventy miles.Bombs grew heavier and heavier.Now the wars are won or lost in the laboratories and workshops They are the busiest centers of modern warfare.The soldiers have become only tools that that apply these inventions of science.During the world war 2 the German invented more terrible weapons of war to be used on the ground,in the sea and in the air.But each weapon of offence was met with an equally strong weapon of defence.Tanks were met with anti tank guns poisonous gas brought about the manufacture of gas masks.To bring down the bombers ,anti aircraft guns came into being.Non atom bomb ,cobalt bomb,hydrogen bomb,and inter continental missile have been invented.The scientist have developed and cultivated different kinds of germs.They poison air ,water and food.People drop down like flies.  

Science has made war a total war or more extensive.The modern war brings ruin and devastation not only to the armies but also to the poor civilians.Innocent men ,women and children  living in towns and cities are bombarded indiscriminately and killed.It is a war in which every body is attacked and destroyed.With the rapid means of communications and inventions like jets and missiles,war has lost its local characteristic.It has become international.A war between two nations spread like wild fire through out the world.Every sphere of life is effected.

AT the same time science has worked much to save mankind.Defensive weapons like the gas masks anti tank guns,anti aircraft guns and radars are there for our safety.Some inventions of science are used for amelioration of pain and sufferings and for saving men from diseases and death.Science has also made wonderful progress in the field of medicine and surgery.Ready made food have been prepared for the use of soldiers fighting at out of the way places.Through transmitters soldiers can inform the base of their condition.If science is directed towards the progress of peace and human good,the world can be changed into a paradise.

 Science & Religion:

In its broadest sense religion is a human attempt to correlate the individual with the universe around him and its maker.It is as whitehead says ''the human reaction of human nature to its search of God ''.Science may be defined as systematic or formulated knowledge of any thing.Religion is as old as as human kind.It was then a submission before the forces of nature.The age of modern science as about two hundred years years.For hundred of centuries,religion had  an exclusive sway over men.Every thing was explained as the doing of God.Science came and sought to explain things by attributing causes ,Thus began the struggle between science and religion or between reason and faith.In the beginning the champion of science were punished by the religious leaders and courts.They were called magician in contact with the devil.But nothing could frustrate the on ward march of science.In the end of 19th ,and in the beginning of 20th ,science came to dominate all the realms of thought and judgement.Religion had to give way.Now question is ;should we discard religion totally and adopt science?

There are many points of difference in the field and activities of science and religion.Science is a matter of fact and deals with facts and figures;religion deal with doctrines and beliefs.Science is concerned with the material world around us;religion aims at a divine order that lies far above.Scientific truth are established by dint of efforts,inquiry,patient observations and experiments;spiritual and religious truth are obtained by means of prayer,fasting and the performance of various ceremonial rites.Science is the born enemy of conventions and and hear says. Religion according to the common belief is said to exist on these .Religion is always dogmatic in character ;science is never found to be so.Science places matter over mind .For it observation and experiment are the only dependable source of knowledge .Religion ignores matter and adopts mind;its source of knowledge is intuition.

But these differences do not mean that religion and science are the enemies of each other.They are complementary to each other.Indeed in a scientific age we need more of religion .Religion and science can exist side by side.Duke of Wellington once said ''Educate men without religion and you make them but clever devils ''.Science provides power and religion tells how it is to be used .Science discloses the secrets of nature and religion answers the questions relating to the mysteries of life and death .Physical comfort is provided by the science ;the soul of the man is satisfied by the religion.In his moods of helplessness ,man needs the protection of some supreme power who can restore his peace of mind .Edmund bruke has rightly said ''Man is by his constitution a religious animal ''According to Mathew Arnold ''Religion is the voice of deepest human experience ''Science too contribute a good deal to the development of religious spirit.It brings the people into direct contact with the mysteries of the universe.A man contact with the mysteries of the universe.A man having knowledge of science is more religious than an ordinary man because when he has a look at the universe,he comes to recognize the greatness of God.There have been many scientist who are famous for their spiritual attainments.In short science and religion may justly be regarded as all
