Abdul Sattar Edhi was born in 1928 in Gujarat (India) and after the partition of subcontinent into Pakistan and India ,he migrated to Pakistan in 1947.His father was a business man dealing in clothes. He always felt sorrow and grief over the miserable condition of the people around him.The terrible scene of partition also had very deep and lasting effect on his heart overwhelmingly, because he had seen the murder of innocent people of both side Pakistan and India. In addition to this he had seen the devastating scenario of migration in which thousands people were killed. After watching such type of horrible condition of people, his heart melt to help these people. This incident became a very power full incentive behind his role as a great philanthropist and in this way he decided to lead his remaining life for the poor, needy, and helpless common people. He always helped the people with true spirit and religiously.
In the initial days after migration to Pakistan he came in the city area of Karachi, which is the largest city of Pakistan now a days.In Jodia bazar Karachi Edhi along with his family rented a small room and they planned there for their future activities and program. Edhi with his family established a temporary and provisional hospital in a tent and doctors were called from civil hospital and this tent medical aid center was established in the area of Mitha Dar near Khara Dar.At that time this medical aid point was provided with eleven mobile dispensaries. Now a days if you visit Karachi you will find Edhi Centre exactly at that place where this initial Edhi Centre was established. Now at present that service has become one of the largest charity net work all over the world due to his feelings, devotion and enthusiasm for the common people.More over first free dispensary was opened in 1951 by the Edhi and with the passage of time this generosity expanded its operation from Karachi to other cities of Pakistan, eventually across the borders. Now in Pakistan there are many hospitals, dispensaries, shelter for aged people, orphanages .nursing homes and a lot of other services are playing their assigned role for the welfare of needy people under the command and control of Edhi foundation. In addition to this, this welfare organization is also providing graveyards and morgues facilities for common people. There are a big numbers of ambulances available in ready condition to play their specific role on the eve of accident or death any sort of terrorism activities. The role played by their workers cannot be ignored at all, some time they have to collect dead bodies at the risk of their own life, particularly at the spot of terror activity, it is not only very difficult but also some time it becomes impossible to collect dead bodies from the place of incident.Same situation is faced when they have to confront the riots.criminal assault etc.
Abdul Sattar Edhi got married in 1966 with a nurse named Bilqis who is now famous as Bilqis Edhi.In ordered to run his operation smoothly Edhi motivated his wife to seek her co operation and involvement in his great mission.According to the Edhi's expectation she responded positively. She was assigned the role and task of administration of this massive operation. She putt her best efforts in the completion of her task and duties. She proved herself a reliable companion of Edhi. Edhi was a neat, clean and very simple person who devoted whole of his life for others.I always saw him dressed in dark tunic, sitting with driver on front seat in ambulance, collecting donation on the road just like lay man.His out look and simplicity was worth seeing and amazing.Every Pakistani was impressed and motivated from his polite behavior and attitude.
In an interview in 2009 he disclosed his role in Karachi during the war of 1965.In this war he collected the body parts of dead as well as injured people as a result of bombing and shelling on Karachi. The responsibility of bathing these bodies was rest upon my wife where as collection of bodies was in my domain duty. This incident turned my mind and heart and after this,i decided to lead remaining life for humanity and religion.Actually war 1965 proved a turning point in my life.My thinking, ideas, views and course of life made ''humanity''the pivoting point of my life.
An other matter of great concern in our society is that many children who were unwanted by their families due to illegitimate act or any other reason, were either killed or thrown away to provide shelter and protection these children are endowed with cradles, where these children can find their new guardian.Similarly Edhi also filed a very important petition regarding the identification of these children because ,as we already know that these children belong to unknown biological parentage and their future demands their identity. So for the first time in the history of Pakistan Edhi raised this critical issue in the form ob petition for the issuance of their national identity card which ultimately finalized in his favour. It was a great achievement of Edhi. Later on the name of the guardian was also included in their national identity card with the efforts of Edhi for their documentation.
